Why You Keep Overeating At Night

This week we're talking about the sneaky little lies that are keeping you overweight and how you can recognise and reverse them

Let's talk about reason #103 why you keep overeating at night... "banking calories".

"I haven't eaten all day so I DESERVE this"
"I haven't eaten all day so I can AFFORD to eat this"
"I haven't eaten all day so I can SPLURGE now"

*insert whiney voice here*

Straight up, banking calories is not a thing. You can't "save now, spend later" when it comes to calories and what you eat. Your body needs sufficient calories all throughout the day so it can function efficiently. And if you don't give it those calories when it needs them, it will force you to eat tsunami-sized portions of food to compensate.

Straight up, banking calories is not a thing. You can't "save now, spend later" when it comes to calories and what you eat.

Here's what you should do instead:

1. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.
You might be busy with kids, meetings etc, but it only takes a moment to check-in and see how you're feeling.

2. IF YOU'RE HUNGRY, E.A.T!!
This is not rocket science. What do you feel like eating at that moment? Honour your body's needs. It's here to support you for the long haul. Respect that.

3. YOU DESERVE TO EAT WHAT YOU ENJOY.
You don't have to bank calories or wait for a special occasion to eat the doughnut. If you want it, eat it and enjoy it. The doughnut does not mean you have "ruined" your eating or "failed". It's just a doughnut. Enjoy it for what it is and move the fu*k on.

There is never going to be a "right time" to deal with your emotional eating. There is just time and you choose what to do with it.

It won't be easier tomorrow.
It won't be easier next week.
And it definitely won't be easier next month.

I want to be clear, you can't (and won't) do it before you're ready. That's okay, too. But you will need to push yourself *a little*.

Want a life and body that feels easy and not stressy? You gotta step up, girl.

It's not going to feel good, but that's what growing and becoming an even more amazing wife/mother/partner/woman looks like!

STEP 1 - What are you willing to DO to make your relationship with food (or anything) the way you want it?

STEP 2 - What are you willing to STOP doing to have things the way you want it?

STEP 3 - How can you do what's necessary to get the job done AND enjoy the process? (and p.s. there are a million options here)

Remember, the feelings you get from eating when you're not hungry are only a temporary escape. Changing your relationship with yourself lasts a lifetime.

LINE NEW

From her business ethos to her active wear and ridiculously healthy glow, Lorna Jane is the epitome of Active Living.

So, needless to say that when the opportunity arose to meet Lorna during her Australian Nourish Book Tour, it was a resounding “yeah, baby!” from me!

Want to know the 10 biggest lessons I learned from meeting Lorna Jane?

Here we go!…

1. If you have a passion for something… Go For It!

Nobody else is going to push you. If you have a desire to do something, anything, then YOU are the only person who can make it happen.

If you want to lose weight, YOU must decide you’re worth it. If you want to write a book, YOU need to start putting pen to paper.

If you’d like to clean up your diet, then YOU need to take action. If living your most exciting fulfilling life is what you want…well, I think you can see where this is going… YOU need to MAKE IT HAPPEN.

And if you REEEALLY want to show ’em what you got, then check out The Big Sugar Detox.

If you’re ready to blitz your weight loss goals, then THIS is the place to start!

2. Believe in yourself ALL the way

If you want to achieve anything in life, you must first BELIEVE that it’s possible, and that it’s possible for YOU.

We’ve all heard the saying “if one person can do it, anyone can”. Why do people say this? Because it’s TRUE! If one person can beat emotional eating and diet drama, so can you!

Yes, we all have our moments of doubt, that’s a given, but as long as you keep your vision of the life you want squarely in front of you, you WILL make it.

3. Emotional eating is REAL

Lorna and I spoke about it and we agree; emotional eating is a HUGE issue.

Does that mean there’s no hope? No, of course not. Keep searching until you find what works for you. Join a program. Find ways to deal with your emotions other than food. There are many paths to lead you home. Keep searching until you find what works for you.

4. Sugar Addiction is REAL

Sweets have been both my best friend and unfortunately, my worst enemy. As a busy woman, I know what it’s like to crave a sweet reward at the end of a long day.

It’s unavoidable. Our hormones are constantly plotting against us. Cravings arise and suddenly, that chocolate cake that was meant for the children is devoured in a frenzy of frosting and crumbs.

We now know that eating sugar triggers the same response in the brain as cocaine, so it’s little wonder we find it so hard to kick sugars sweet, sweet tooshie to the curb.

I used to try to “white knuckle” my way through a sugar craving, but it never ended well (think, an entire block of Cadbury’s chocolate in five minutes). These days, I like to answer the call from my sweet tooth with a little more dignity. Check out my Raw Cherry Ripe Brownies or Chocolate Banana Smoothie for some healthy inspiration.

5. Believing in your own worth is ESSENTIAL to beating emotional eating

If YOU don’t think you’re worth taking care of, you’ll never overcome emotional eating.

There. I said it.

You may not like it, you may not even agree with it, but it’s the truth. Until you truly know that you are the most precious being to walk the earth, until you really cherish yourself, you won’t ever overcome emotional eating.

6. Crowding out is the ONLY WAY to give dietary nasties the flick

If you want to guarantee you’ll go on a binge, cut your favourite foods OUT OF your diet. If you want to stop the diet/binge cycle, bring new and HEALTHY foods INTO your diet.

Don’t eliminate the old, just introduce so many fabulous new options that the old nasties have no choice but to fall by the wayside! I love this Strawberry Weight Loss Milkshake or my Quinoa Pumpkin Salad with Roasted Chickpeas.

7. Movement is important, but you don’t have to run a marathon

If you’re waiting for Tinkerbell to fly into your lounge room, switch off the TV and shake your butt off the couch, then I’m sorry to shatter your dreams, but it isn’t going to happen! Just do something… ANYTHING. Every little bit counts.

 8. Fun and laughter are ESSENTIAL

Anger and frustration release the stress hormone cortisol into our bodies. What does this mean? Fast weight gain, that’s what!

Laugh a little. Take the children on that nature walk you’ve been promising. Lighten up. Why make weight loss any harder than it needs to be?

9. Sharing the love is the secret to success

When you find something that works for you, share it. Tell a friend. Tweet it. The information you have could be the exact thing someone else is searching for!

10. Be your own cheerleader

When it seems like everyone around you has lost the faith, it’s up to you to keep the torch burning. You CAN do this. You HAVE the power. It’s time to step into it and OWN it.
