Why You Keep Overeating At Night

This week we're talking about the sneaky little lies that are keeping you overweight and how you can recognise and reverse them

Let's talk about reason #103 why you keep overeating at night... "banking calories".

"I haven't eaten all day so I DESERVE this"⁠
"I haven't eaten all day so I can AFFORD to eat this"⁠
"I haven't eaten all day so I can SPLURGE now"⁠

*insert whiney voice here*

Straight up, banking calories is not a thing. You can't "save now, spend later" when it comes to calories and what you eat. Your body needs sufficient calories all throughout the day so it can function efficiently. And if you don't give it those calories when it needs them, it will force you to eat tsunami-sized portions of food to compensate.

Here's what you should do instead:⁠

You might be busy with kids, meetings etc, but it only takes a moment to check-in and see how you're feeling.⁠

This is not rocket science. What do you feel like eating at that moment? Honour your body's needs. It's here to support you for the long haul. Respect that.⁠

You don't have to bank calories or wait for a special occasion to eat the doughnut. If you want it, eat it and enjoy it. The doughnut does not mean you have "ruined" your eating or "failed". It's just a doughnut. Enjoy it for what it is and move the fu*k on.⁠

There is never going to be a "right time" to deal with your emotional eating. There is just time and you choose what to do with it.⁠⁠
It won't be easier tomorrow.⁠⁠
It won't be easier next week.⁠⁠
And it definitely won't be easier next month.⁠⁠
I want to be clear, you can't (and won't) do it before you're ready. That's okay, too. But you will need to push yourself *a little*.
Want a life and body that feels easy and not stressy?⁠ You gotta step up, girl.

It's not going to feel good, but that's what growing and becoming an even more amazing wife/mother/partner/woman looks like!
STEP 1 - What are you willing to DO to make your relationship with food (or anything) the way you want it?⁠⁠
STEP 2 - What are you willing to STOP doing to have things the way you want it?⁠⁠
STEP 3 - How can you do what's necessary to get the job done AND enjoy the process? (and p.s. there are a million options here)⁠⁠
Remember, the feelings you get from eating when you're not hungry are only a temporary escape. Changing your relationship with yourself lasts a lifetime.

So, the Easter Bunny delivered an entire Lindt factory of chocolate to your door this Easter, and of course you just had to eat it.

I mean, it’d be rude not to, right?





I get it. Easter used to be my complete undoing every.single.year.


I would FINALLY get my eating together after Christmas and then, BAM! Easter would hit me and I was down for the count. Hot cross buns and ear-less chocolate bunnies were spread from one end of the kitchen to the other. It was not a pretty sight. 😉


Thankfully, since Ditching the Diet, I’ve learned a thing or two about how to get back on track after a mini (or major) binge session.

don’t panic

You have not “broken” your diet and you DON’T need to “start fresh” next Monday.

Ditching the Diet means ditching the perfection. Your eating doesn’t have to be perfect. This is real life. Parties, birthdays and holidays will come and go and it’s perfectly fine to enjoy a treat if that’s what you really want. Don’t beat yourself up. It’s is all part of the process.


remember why you started

If it all starts to get a bit much and those chocolate bunnies are calling your name at 2am, take a pause and remember why you started. Think about what you want even more than nibbling on a chocolate bunny ear… you want a body you can feel comfortable in, you want to be free from the anxiety of worrying about what to eat at the next family BBQ so you don’t gain weight, you want to jump out of bed each morning feeling good about yourself. Write yourself a reminder and stick it on your fridge. Then give the chocolate bunnies to the neighbour!

That’s right! Spend MORE time in the kitchen, not less! Let’s face it, if your only choices of food are between a half eaten Easter egg and a droopy-looking carrot stick, you’ll choose the chocolate every time. Fill your pantry with goji berries, cacao and raw nuts. Stock up your fridge with organic fruit, veggies and greens and then… go for it! Start cooking! Download some recipes and whip up a superfood superstorm! You’ll be sooooo much more likely to eat delicious, healthy food if you actually have some there!


up your healthy fats

No, you’re not seeing a chocoholics mirage, I really did say eat more fat. Just make sure it’s the right kind of fat, baby!

Healthy fats like coconut oil and avocado will actually ramp up your metabolism and help you burn more fat! Add a dash of coconut milk to your Chia Chai Latte, throw some avocado in your next Chocolate Banana Smoothie or throw some extra coconut in your next batch of Sexy Superfood Snackbars. These little gems are soooo delish, you’ll be breaking up with regular ‘ol chocolate in no time!


do something for YOU

So here’s the rub… as women we do, do, do for everyone else and forget about the singular most important person in our world… YOU! Take some time to do something just for you. Get a facial, take a walk, soak in the tub, it doesn’t matter what you choose, but it has to be totally selfish (and unapologetically so) Treat yourself like you’re worth your own time. Let yourself know that you are special and you deserve to be treated as such. No one deserves your love and attention more than YOU!
