Why You Keep Overeating At Night

This week we're talking about the sneaky little lies that are keeping you overweight and how you can recognise and reverse them

Let's talk about reason #103 why you keep overeating at night... "banking calories".

"I haven't eaten all day so I DESERVE this"⁠
"I haven't eaten all day so I can AFFORD to eat this"⁠
"I haven't eaten all day so I can SPLURGE now"⁠

*insert whiney voice here*

Straight up, banking calories is not a thing. You can't "save now, spend later" when it comes to calories and what you eat. Your body needs sufficient calories all throughout the day so it can function efficiently. And if you don't give it those calories when it needs them, it will force you to eat tsunami-sized portions of food to compensate.

Here's what you should do instead:⁠

1. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. ⁠
You might be busy with kids, meetings etc, but it only takes a moment to check-in and see how you're feeling.⁠

2. IF YOU'RE HUNGRY, E.A.T!!⁠
This is not rocket science. What do you feel like eating at that moment? Honour your body's needs. It's here to support you for the long haul. Respect that.⁠

3. YOU DESERVE TO EAT WHAT YOU ENJOY.⁠
You don't have to bank calories or wait for a special occasion to eat the doughnut. If you want it, eat it and enjoy it. The doughnut does not mean you have "ruined" your eating or "failed". It's just a doughnut. Enjoy it for what it is and move the fu*k on.⁠

There is never going to be a "right time" to deal with your emotional eating. There is just time and you choose what to do with it.⁠⁠

It won't be easier tomorrow.⁠⁠
It won't be easier next week.⁠⁠
And it definitely won't be easier next month.⁠⁠

I want to be clear, you can't (and won't) do it before you're ready. That's okay, too. But you will need to push yourself *a little*.

Want a life and body that feels easy and not stressy?⁠ You gotta step up, girl.

It's not going to feel good, but that's what growing and becoming an even more amazing wife/mother/partner/woman looks like!

STEP 1 - What are you willing to DO to make your relationship with food (or anything) the way you want it?⁠⁠

STEP 2 - What are you willing to STOP doing to have things the way you want it?⁠⁠
⁠⁠
STEP 3 - How can you do what's necessary to get the job done AND enjoy the process? (and p.s. there are a million options here)⁠⁠

Remember, the feelings you get from eating when you're not hungry are only a temporary escape. Changing your relationship with yourself lasts a lifetime.

Tell the truth…

Are you STILL trying to lose weight by dieting?

After all these years, all the STRUGGLE, the HEARTACHE, the SELF LOATHING, the SELF JUDGEMENT (need I go on?)… Are you still dancing to the beat of the Diet Industry’s drum?

Do you have what it takes to lose weight?

 

I’m proud to say that I’ve ditched the diet.

Yup.

I stopped dieting and I lost weight. And you know what? I’m proud of it!

BUT ALLOW ME TO CLARIFY…

Am I saying that I’m proud that I lost weight?

No. Not at all.

 

You probably want to throw something at me right now, believe me, I’m well aware of how crazy this sounds, but it’s the truth.

I’m NOT proud that I lost the weight.

That was never what it was about.

Anyone who starves themselves long enough on a diet can lose weight. Heck, a trained monkey can do it; so no… I’m not proud that I lost the weight.

 

What I AM proud of is that despite the fact that the journey was slower than it would have been had I taken the traditional “diet route”, I DID IT ANYWAY.

 

Despite the fact that it WASN’T always easy, I DID IT ANYWAY.

Despite the fact that I COULD HAVE joined another “lose 7 kilos in 7 days” program, I DID IT ANYWAY.

For once I put MY personal interests before everybody else and I STUCK WITH IT.

When all you’ve ever known is being on a diet, it’s hard to know what’s on the other side…

 

But does it really matter?

Because you darn well KNOW it has to be better than this.

 

Better than starting a new diet every Monday and swimming in cookie crumbs by Tuesday afternoon.

Better than cropping your arms/stomach/butt out of all your social media pictures because you’re ashamed of your size.

Better than avoiding social situations because you’ve gained ANOTHER five kilos after you SWORE that THIS TIME you had reached your limit.

Yeah, it takes guts served with a side of “selfish” to take that leap of faith.

 

But sometimes you have to be a little selfish NOW so you can give more of yourself in the FUTURE.

 

So yeah, I was selfish.

I was selfish enough to take my money away from the diet industry and give it back to ME.

I was selfish enough to invest in MYSELF for a change, instead of putting everyone else first.

I was selfish enough to stop working like a squirrel on crack cocaine and carve out some time in my own life for, dare I say it… ME!

Yup. Plain old selfish.

But selfish saved my life.

 

If you think I’ve gone completely nuts, then you should shut your computer screen now. What I’m about to say next isn’t for you.

 

But…

If you’re nodding your head like a crazed lunatic because you’re actually RELIEVED that someone has said all the things you’ve been thinking for years, then read on…

It’s NOT selfish to put yourself first. In fact, when you’ve been dieting as long as I had, I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s ESSENTIAL.

I’m proud to say I made space in my own life for MYSELF and I want you to be able to do the same.
