As an emotional eating coach and an ex-binge eater, I can tell you that binge eating is waaaaay more common than you may think.⁠


The problem (besides the problem itself) is that no one talks about it which leaves you feeling ashamed, isolated, and embarrassed OR leaves you questioning your sanity ~ “what’s wrong with me?” and “why can’t I control myself?”


HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Binge eating has nothing to do with a lack of willpower.⁠ Going on a diet to “control your eating” will only make the urge to binge stronger.⁠ Binge eating is a coping mechanism for feeling or not feeling something.⁠ Binge eating can be a mask for repressed anger, unmet needs, depression, or anxiety (this is not an exhaustive list. Just some that I’ve experienced).⁠


Binge eating always seems like a good idea at the time because it never PRESENTS as binge eating.


It will lure you in with the temptation to eat “just a little,” which leads to you feeling like a monumental fk up so you drown those feelings in chocolate.⁠

The ONLY way to begin healing from binge eating is to eliminate restrictive eating patterns with food.⁠ As long as you keep a list of GOOD and BAD foods, you will stay stuck in the BE cycle.⁠


1. I started giving myself permission to eat all kinds of foods. Food rules be gone! No foods were off-limits!⁠

2. I listened to my body. Just because I could eat all the chocolate didn’t mean I had to. I could have it again tomorrow if I wanted. I was never going to take it away from myself again.

3. I gave myself time.


Binge eating won’t go away overnight. But as long as you’re committed to seeking out support when you need it, or talking through your struggle with someone who cares, you’re going to make it through.
