Why You Keep Overeating At Night

This week we're talking about the sneaky little lies that are keeping you overweight and how you can recognise and reverse them

Let's talk about reason #103 why you keep overeating at night... "banking calories".

"I haven't eaten all day so I DESERVE this"⁠
"I haven't eaten all day so I can AFFORD to eat this"⁠
"I haven't eaten all day so I can SPLURGE now"⁠

*insert whiney voice here*

Straight up, banking calories is not a thing. You can't "save now, spend later" when it comes to calories and what you eat. Your body needs sufficient calories all throughout the day so it can function efficiently. And if you don't give it those calories when it needs them, it will force you to eat tsunami-sized portions of food to compensate.

Here's what you should do instead:⁠

1. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. ⁠
You might be busy with kids, meetings etc, but it only takes a moment to check-in and see how you're feeling.⁠

2. IF YOU'RE HUNGRY, E.A.T!!⁠
This is not rocket science. What do you feel like eating at that moment? Honour your body's needs. It's here to support you for the long haul. Respect that.⁠

3. YOU DESERVE TO EAT WHAT YOU ENJOY.⁠
You don't have to bank calories or wait for a special occasion to eat the doughnut. If you want it, eat it and enjoy it. The doughnut does not mean you have "ruined" your eating or "failed". It's just a doughnut. Enjoy it for what it is and move the fu*k on.⁠

There is never going to be a "right time" to deal with your emotional eating. There is just time and you choose what to do with it.⁠⁠

It won't be easier tomorrow.⁠⁠
It won't be easier next week.⁠⁠
And it definitely won't be easier next month.⁠⁠

I want to be clear, you can't (and won't) do it before you're ready. That's okay, too. But you will need to push yourself *a little*.

Want a life and body that feels easy and not stressy?⁠ You gotta step up, girl.

It's not going to feel good, but that's what growing and becoming an even more amazing wife/mother/partner/woman looks like!

STEP 1 - What are you willing to DO to make your relationship with food (or anything) the way you want it?⁠⁠

STEP 2 - What are you willing to STOP doing to have things the way you want it?⁠⁠
⁠⁠
STEP 3 - How can you do what's necessary to get the job done AND enjoy the process? (and p.s. there are a million options here)⁠⁠

Remember, the feelings you get from eating when you're not hungry are only a temporary escape. Changing your relationship with yourself lasts a lifetime.

Well, this IS my face. And I DID have a long day at the office. But this is definitely NOT how I look every day!

I promised you an epic surprise  and and an epic surprise you shall have, but first…

Or maybe you didn’t celebrate halloween, but you STILL managed to scarf down enough candy to put a small Cadbury’s factory out of business.

Here’s the thing… sugar is EIGHT TIMES MORE ADDICTIVE THAN COCAINE (does that make us addicts? hmmm…) So the next time you’re in need of a “hit”, here’s some things you can do…

 

This is not normal

Clawing your way through the day like a rabid squirrel is not normal. Craving sweets so bad that you would sell your first born child to get some is not normal. Only feeling happy when you’re eating cookies, candy, chocolate, cake? Nope. Still not normal. No amount of “white knuckling” it will get you over the hump. Sugar addiction is real and thinking you can beat this alone is just cherry pie in the sky thinking. So how do you do it? Haha! This is where my BIG SURPRISE comes in! Re-stock, Re-stock, Re-stock

I know, I know, you’ve heard it all before… Throw out the junk food and replace it with healthy food, right? Well if you know it, then why haven’t you done it? If you’re not doing it, then you don’t really know it. Things only become real to us once we can associate an experience with them. To know you should not bring choc chip cookies into the house “for the kids” is one thing, but to actually leave them on the shelf at the supermarket is an entirely different kind of “knowing”. Fill your kitch with fresh fruits, dried fruit, nuts for protein power and healthy fats like avocado and coconut yoghurt. It’s okay… don’t run screaming, “fat” is not a dirty word, I promise you. Fat is what will keep you feeling full (not to mention sane) as you boot those sweet refined nasties out the door!

It’s not legit to restrict

It’s time to give up the “all or nothing” attitude of dieting. You are human, not a robot. It’s okay to eat some chocolate or cookies if you really want them. I make my own crazy delicious healthy dark chocolate and if I come face to face with a craving the size of a chocolate coated iceberg, I take out a piece of my chocolate, ceremoniously place it on my favourite little plate, add some healthy nuts or dried fruit, sink into a comfy chair with my green tea and thoroughly enjoy my slice of chocolate heaven. If I’m going to eat it, I make sure I enjoy it. It’s my time. It’s sacred. And when that chocolate hits my tongue all other problems melt away. It’s not healthy to restrict or deprive yourself of things you love. And it’s essential to beating the binge.
